UC Irvine Hosts Latino Health Care Symposium Oct. 16
In order to further address Latino health care issues within the Irvine community, UCI will hold the fifth-annual Tamkin Symposium at the Tamkin Auditorium in the College of Medicine on Oct. 16.
‘Health Care Disparities: The Latino Experience’ is sponsored by Dr. Jerome Tankin and his wife.
The all-day symposium will feature speakers including U.S. Department of Health and Human Services deputy assistant secretary of health, Dr. Cristina Beato and UCI professor of anthropology Leo Chavez. Speakers will lecture on whether Latinos in Southern California can access and receive health care.
University Scientists find Alarming Air Pollution Levels
In a study that has been recently conducted by UC Irvine atmospheric scientists F. Sherwood Rowland and Donald Blake, the scientists and their colleagues found that the greenhouse gases in the areas of Oklahoma, Texas and parts of Kansas have the same air pollution levels as many urban cities.
The study concluded that due to greenhouse gases released from oil and natural gas processing plants, methane levels in these areas were comparable to urban areas in the U.S.
Their findings support the notion that the U.S. is emitting more global-warming gases than previously thought.
